The FSA, whose slogan for the campaign is 'Go for Gold', has spoken to trade bodies representing fast-food firms, as well as fish and chip shops, alerting them to the concerns. It also advised people to eat more boiled, mashed and steamed foods, and urged them to stop storing potatoes in the fridge as this leads to a chemical change called cold sweetening that increases acrylamide.
It suggested people should switch from skinny chips to chunky versions, because, weight for weight, they have less surface area.

The FSA issued a series of warnings based on the consumption of acrylamide, listing burnt toast as a 'danger food'. While it said 'even food industry workers, who are exposed to twice as much acrylamide as other people, do not have higher rates of cancer.' On its website it also warned of 'weak and inconsistent' data regarding a higher risk of womb cancer. 'However, evidence from human studies has shown that, for most cancer types, there is no link between acrylamide and cancer risk.'
